Elohim -- the Creator God, the plural form of El (denoting His majesty)
Each time we see "God" in chapter one, we see the Majestic Creator, the Designer of life, the Supreme One. Over and over we read that the Supreme God saw what He had made and it was good! I love to marvel in the majesty and grandeur of Elohim as seen in His creation: the beauty of a sunset, the intricate details of a leaf or snowflake, the colors of the hummingbird's feathers, the way the each part of the human body works in harmony, the miracle of conception and birth. The list goes on and on.
Though I acknowledge Elohim and marvel in His awesome creation, I still sometimes question His design of me. I have listened to the lies of the world and believed their redefinition beauty. I am growing in this area, but still have room to trust. As I carried each of my unborn children, I struggled with worry about how Elohim would design and create them. I was fearful instead of trusting.
Elohim, I see your majesty in the world all around me. Thank you for creating me and caring for me. I will praise you for I am fearfully and wonderfully made! Marvelous are your works!!!
In chapter 2, Elohim is also referred to as the LORD God or Yaweh Elohim. Yaweh is the I AM. He is self-existent. This name was a very personal name for God. It demonstrated his nearness.
In chapter 3, Satan slithers in and we have the introduction of spiritual warfare. "Did Elohim actually say?" How many times have I listened to that same line? How many times have I questioned the Almighty?
I noticed that when Satan spoke of God, he used Elohim instead of Yaweh Elohim. It was just very interesting to me that he acknowledged God as the Supreme Creator but not as the I AM, not as the personal Self-existent One. That makes me wonder if how we view God influences our response to Him: how we worship Him, how we obey Him, how we speak of Him. I am sure it does. I am just not sure that I have viewed it in this context before. Definitely something to chew on... (I am not a scholar on the names of God, I have only scratched the surface in the few years I have been studying them, but I am enjoying digging deeper!)
Yaweh Elohim, You are the I AM! You are my El, my God. Thank you for the invitation you give to draw nigh to You. Unfathomable! The Creator of the Universe, the God of all gods will draw near to me! Today, Lord, amidst the chaos, help me to walk with You, to commune with You, to draw near to You! Help me battle the spiritual warfare that surrounds me each day in my heart and mind. Fill me with your Word.
Do you have areas in which you doubt the Elohim?
How is your view of God, your acknowledgement of Him, your submission to Him?
Since Genesis 3, Satan has been in pursuit of people. What spiritual warfare is plaguing you?
